In-depth exploration of the Survival category, to inform future strategies
The Challenge
Our client, a well-established developer and publisher, was looking to deepen its understanding of the Survival category. The primary aim was to identify the core factors that make a compelling Survival game, uncover what drives player engagement across various titles, and guide strategic decisions for future game development and marketing.
Our Approach
The research had two stages; firstly, completing several exploratory in-depth interviews to uncover why players play Survival games and how motivations varied across titles, including differences between solo and social survival games. The second stage involved a quantitative survey with Survival players, to robustly identify what features were most significant in driving game success in the category (using advanced statistical techniques - drivers analysis and perceptual mapping).
The Outcome
The two-stage methodology allowed us to capture both detailed feedback at the individual player level, as well as robust trends across the category. Results identified features that were expected from any good survival title, but also specific elements where there was opportunity to stand out from other competitors in the market – informing our client’s long-term strategy for its Survival titles.
