Transforming patient engagement through a digital health app
The Challenge
A leading healthcare organisation set out to develop a mobile app to support patients in managing their condition more effectively outside of clinical settings.
However, they faced several challenges:
- Patients struggled to translate clinical advice into everyday behaviours
- Existing digital tools were seen as overly complex, clinical, and hard to sustain engagement with
- There was limited understanding of how to design for long-term adherence, not just initial app usage
- The organisation needed to ensure the app would deliver meaningful outcomes for both patients and healthcare providers
The ambition was clear: create a solution that would move beyond information delivery to drive real-world behaviour change and improve patient outcomes.
Our Approach
Bryter partnered with the client to design a patient-centric app grounded in deep insight, behavioural science, and iterative development.
1. Understanding real-world behaviours
We conducted in-depth qualitative research to explore:
- Patient journeys from diagnosis through ongoing management
- Emotional and practical barriers to adherence
- Day-to-day decision-making in real-life contexts
This revealed a critical gap between knowledge and action , patients understood what to do but found it difficult to apply consistently.
2. Applying behavioural science principles
We embedded behavioural science frameworks to shape the app experience:
- Simplification: breaking complex guidance into manageable actions
- Habit formation: encouraging small, repeatable behaviours over time
- Motivation and reinforcement: using progress tracking and positive feedback
- Timely interventions: delivering prompts at key decision moments
This reframed the app as a supportive companion, rather than a static information tool.
3. Designing an intuitive, human-centred experience
We translated insights into clear UX and feature recommendations:
- Personalised content tailored to individual needs and goals
- Clear, jargon-free language to improve accessibility
- Low-friction interfaces designed for everyday use
- Features that supported real life situations, not idealised behaviours
The design prioritised empathy, simplicity, and relevance to ensure sustained engagement.
4. Iterative development and validation
Concepts and prototypes were tested with users throughout:
- Rapid feedback loops to refine usability and functionality
- Prioritisation of high-impact features
- Continuous optimisation to improve engagement and retention
This ensured the final product was both usable and behaviourally effective.
